Italian delight at Bassano

Manchester's new creative hub 'Home' has made leaps and bounds in taking shape as the attractive arts and leisure space it promised to be when the plans were initially laid down.

Not only has it provided a fresh cultural hotspot but an alternative watering-hole for thirsty Mancunians. Bassano is the latest addition to this ever-growing scene.

The resulting collaboration of Pizza Express and Bassano Events is an Al-Fresco delight packed with character, an outdoor / indoor garden that provides a wonderful setting, especially as the sun sets and the lights of 'Home' shine over the greenhouse-style bar.

The menu itself, is a fantastic selection of Italian classics; from delicious Aperitivi's and after dinner delights to locally inspired concoctions like the 'Hacienda Sour', 'Manchester Negroni' and the 'Manchester G&T' which make excellent use of Manchester's Three Rivers Gin.

Now being someone who's pallet hasn't really stretched much further than beer and whisky, dissecting a cocktail menu is something of a daunting task. However, thankfully the owner Dave (Drinks Enthusiast) was on-hand to guide me through.

The Coretto Martini's authentic use of actual coffee beans made it a delicious pick-me-up, something much nicer than the average coffee liquor. A perfect after dinner, desert alternative.

A personal highlight though, was the 'Smoked On The Bridge'. The exotic Nardini combined with the undertones meant I was never too far astray from a traditional Old Fashioned; the usual / only cocktail I venture towards.

The key idea for Bassano in Manchester, was to demystify any stigma around complicated cocktails. A simple menu designed to coax stubborn drinkers (like myself) out of their comfort zone, something that it's obviously succeeding in doing!
